Sharing links across social media networks are popular. But use caution when you click those links cause those links might be a lead to a security flaws. Images shared across social media networks has tag links too so think before you click. You can check the links tag on an image by pointing your mouse pointer on that image and look at your browser’s status bar which is at the bottom(in most browser).

Another way for the hacker to penetrate a security is to use the information provided by it’s target. For instance, hacker can break your accounts security by clicking “Forgot Password?”. To break your account security, they will search for the answer to your security questions, such as your birthday, hometown, high school class, father’s name, mother’s name and etc., on your social media network. If the site allows that kind of recovery option, make up your own security questions, and don’t draw them from any material that quick search could find.

Think of the possibility that the account of your friend might be hacked. Hacker may use other victim to target a new victim. So be careful of your friends messages, be cautious and make sure that you are really exchanging information with friends.

  1. Don’t Login your account in a third party sites.

Type the address of the social media directly to your browser and don’t login to a third party site. As this might be a Phishing or a fake site trying to copy your account information such as your username and Password.

  1. Be Selective when accepting new friends.

You may consider viewing the profile first and check for mutual friends before accepting the request. Hacker may use a fake identity in order to get information from you.

Knowing the site carefully and understanding the privacy policy is the best way to avoid security flaws. Always check your setting and make sure you know who you are sharing information with.

  1. Assume that every content you share is permanent.

Once you put something on the internet it will become permanent. Even if you can delete your account, someone could make a copy and share it.

  1. Be careful of extension, tools, and app that can be installed on the sites.

Many social media networks allows you to add, install and use third party application that let you do more. However, this feature offered can also cause a security flaws. Hacker may provide you a useful tool but in exchange of the information they will get from you even without your noticed.
